Killer blog headlines

Are you an expert at creating killer blog headlines that grab attention? You don’t have to be an expert at SEO or content marketing to create a headline that grabs your attention. But there’s more to crafting great headlines than just getting clicks. After all, if clicks are the end goal, then aren’t our clever headlines just providing the online world with entertainment? So, what really goes into well-developed blog headlines, and what should they accomplish?

Killer Blog Headlines are Crucial to the Success of Your Blog

Killer blog headlines are crucial to the success of your blog, especially to gaining new subscribers. Email subject lines don’t need to be optimized since they’re not ranked by Google. But blog headlines? They are ranked by Google. So it’s important to craft high-performing blog headlines with a little bit of technical know-how.

Killer Blog Headlines Should:

1. Provide Clarity and Direction

Your blog headline should tell your readers what your article is about. And when you determine your title from the start, you provide a clear path for developing your article. It also ensures that your keyword is in mind as you write. Writing your post this way minimizes edits. And that, my friends, is a good thing!

2. Be Honest and Accurate

Your ability to develop trust with your audience relies heavily on honesty and transparency. Your blog headlines should give an honest picture of your post’s content. For example, if your post How to Make Sure Your New Puppy Never has Another Accident Ever doesn’t deliver, you’ve just lost credibility.

3. Communicate to Humans; not Spiders

Just because you need to optimize your blog headlines for web-crawlers doesn’t mean they have to sound like it. Use words and phrases that speak to your target audience, words and phrases that sound natural.

4. Drive Traffic to Your Site

Optimize your post so it ranks high in search results. You want to create blog headlines that perform well, aka drive traffic to your site. Follow these guidelines for optimizing your blog headlines:

  • Always use a keyword or keyword phrase
  • Limit the length of your headlines to a maximum of 70 characters
  • Put your keyword or keyword phrase at the front of your headlines

That last one can be a bit strenuous or challenging to accomplish. But it can be done!

Creating and optimizing blog headlines takes practice and a lot of it. Kind of like learning to play the piano. Using helpful tools like CoSchedule’s Headline Analyzer makes the process much easier. Just remember this: don’t optimize your headlines for the search engines. Write for your audience. That way your headlines won’t read like a robot wrote them. And don’t let your tools become your taskmaster either. You don’t want to spend all your valuable time on optimization at the expense of quality content written for real people.
