You’ve created another great blog post and own the satisfaction of a job well-done. Like most people though, you’ve hit “Publish” and think you’re all done with that blog post. But there’s so much more you can do with it to get the traffic your blog post needs and ensure its success!
After-Publish Tasks to Get the Traffic Your Blog Post Needs
Posting your blog post to social media a few times and moving on to the next post is good, just not good enough. You should work to get as much traffic as you possibly can for each blog post you write. Put these after-publish tasks into action and watch your traffic multiply ten-fold.

Email your blog post to your subscribers
Send your blog post to your email list. I’m not suggesting you send your blog post in its entirety in an email. If your email subscribers are getting a whole blog post in an email, they won’t visit your blog. And that means less traffic, fewer shares, fewer comments, and so forth.
Instead, entice your email subscribers to click through to your blog with a brief “teaser email.” Link your teaser email to your blog and ask your subscribers to share the blog post with others. Ask them to share your blog post on social media, too.
To give you an idea, here’s an example I received from Pat Mussieux:
“Robin
“Last week, I was on the shuttle van heading to the Toronto airport and, because I was bored, I decided to go on Facebook and invite people to ask me any question they wanted. And so they did. It was ‘Pat Unplugged!’ and it was fun.
“You may not follow me on Facebook so I thought I would share the conversation right here with you – Enjoy!
“Click here to view the conversation on Facebook.
“or
“Click here to view it on my blog.
“What questions do YOU have for me? Feel free to send them to info@patmussieux.com and I’ll be happy to answer for you.
“Sincerely,
“Pat”
Bonus tip: Use ClickToTweet to create an easy link for subscribers to share your blog post on Twitter.

Set up an evergreen social media campaign
Again, most people share their blog posts on social media. And that’s good, but not good enough. If you want to go beyond being so-so and generate traffic to your site, get smart. Create evergreen (never-ending) social media campaigns.
What’s an evergreen social media campaign? It’s a series of social media posts that repost themselves automatically. So your blog post gets promoted over and over again.
How do you set up evergreen social media posts so that they will post on autopilot? With tools like MeetEdgar, for one or MissingLettr for another. Click here for six other tools you can use.
Make your social media updates simple. Try sharing these:
- Your blog post headline or some variation of it
- A quote used in your blog post or a piece from your blog post
- An infographic or image from your blog post
- An influencer you referred to or mentioned in your blog post. Tag them.
Bonus tip: Be aware that the use of a lot of automated evergreen content diminishes the personal interaction you enjoy with your friends and contacts on social media. Stay social, personal, authentic, and real.

Reach out to influencers
After publishing your blog post, search for and find influencers who will share your blog post on social media. Just one influencer can get you hundreds or thousands of views.
You can use BuzzSumo to do this (for a fee). Here’s how: Once you’re logged into BuzzSumo, click on the Influencers tab. Then search for the topic of your blog post. Top influencers who share content related to the topic of your blog post will show up.
If you can’t afford the monthly cost for BuzzSumo, try their 14-day free trial. Then search niche-related keywords and find as many influencers as you can during the free trial period. (Categorize the keywords and influencers by topic on an Excel spreadsheet or in an Evernote notebook. Then you’ll know who to reach out to for which blog posts once the 14-day free trial has ended).
After the 14-day free trial expires, google the topics you categorized to find high-ranking blogs. Next, find out who wrote those blogs and check them out on social media. This will help you figure out who would be good to reach out to. Now reach out to them on social media or ask them if they are willing to share your blog post on their social media via an email.
Bonus tip: If you’re choking at the idea or don’t know how to persuade influencers to share one of your blog posts, read this: Brian Dean’s guide on how to get influencers to promote your content for free.

Include high-quality backlinks in your blog posts
Show Google your post is worthy of its first page. Include high-quality backlinks in your niche in your blog post. High-quality backlinks show search engines that your blog post is high-quality by its association with other high-quality sources. It’s best to find and backlink to other blog posts with lots of links to other blog posts that are like yours.
Bonus tip: If you want quality backlinks to rank higher in Google, read Dan Ray’s Backlink Tutorial. You’ll learn how to get 50+ high-quality backlinks per month. It’s an amazing step-by-step article!

Conduct an internal link audit
I know the word “audit” sounds like something in relation to the IRS, but it’s not. It’s the techy name for interlinking your own blog posts with other of your own blog posts. Conducting an internal link audit does three important things to get your blog post the traffic it needs.
- Makes it easier for Google to index your blog post
- Helps your blog post rank in search engines
- Keeps readers browsing your blog
It takes only 10 minutes to do an internal link audit. Check to see if you can add links to other blog posts you’ve written inside your newly published post.
Bonus tip: Challenge yourself to see how many internal links you can add in 10 minutes.
In order to get the traffic your blog post needs and deserves, you must work beyond hitting “Publish.” You must work beyond posting your blog posts to social media. I challenge you to give one of the tasks mentioned a hearty try. And then watch how much your blog traffic increases. Let me know what you tried and how it increased your traffic in the comments below.
