LinkedIn etiquette

For a social platform, LinkedIn has an uncommon and refreshing professional ambiance. And LinkedIn etiquette is what sets it apart from other social platforms. Why? Because manners still matter. A lot.

LinkedIn etiquette has in some ways redefined the social in social media. Proper etiquette considers the value of others and puts them first. And this approach is good for business.

4 Easy LinkedIn Etiquette Tips to Set You Apart

1. Keep It Personal

Do you remember how good it feels to get a handwritten note or thank you card in the mail? Not an email, but an actual handwritten note with a stamp on it. Taking the time to write out a note with pen and paper is really a lost art today. However, with a little effort, you can keep it personal on LinkedIn. Add personal touches that express value to your audience and set yourself apart from the everyday ho-hum.

Here are a few ways you can keep it personal on LinkedIn:

  • Add a personal note when making or replying to connection requests
  • Type a personal thank you note for endorsements or recommendations received from your connections
  • Congratulate your connections on their work anniversaries, promotions, and birthdays

2. Keep It Professional

LinkedIn is not like other social platforms. You’re just not going to find casual conversations or unprofessional images here. You’re just not. But what you will find here is an atmosphere of respect and newsworthy posts relevant to your industry. So what’s appropriate to post on LinkedIn? Here are five ideas:

  • Published articles
  • Product launches or awards
  • Work events (such as conferences or trade shows)
  • Community involvement news
  • Your connections’ accomplishments

3. Keep It Fresh

There’s a reason they call it SPAM. It’s canned. It’s neither relevant nor personal (or any good for that matter). The goal of engagement on LinkedIn should be to add value to others. Taking the time to produce quality and original content adds value to your readers and to your business.

To keep it fresh, you’ll want to post new content frequently. And LocalVox recommends posting fresh content daily Monday through Friday and curating or resharing a post every other day.

4. Keep It Engaging

To keep it engaging on LinkedIn, share others’ content and add comments to their posts. Don’t overdo it though. Too much engagement and your reactions will lose their authenticity. Do take the time to thank your connections when they share your articles or posts.

In Summary …

LinkedIn is a powerful networking and lead-generating tool. Put it to work for you. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and quality business relationships won’t be built in a day either. It takes thoughtfulness, planned effort, and some LinkedIn etiquette applied consistently over time.
